Emerging markets are experiencing a 15-year consolidation. There is not a lot of appetite from investors to push much higher towards a breakout in emerging markets. This may or may not change over time, all we do see is that the emerging markets investing offer very specific opportunities, but certainly no broad opportunities. Most of this is due to the fact that EEM ETF, the ultimate emerging markets fund, is made up of a few large Chinese companies which dominate most of the holdings. Given the dire state of the Chinese economy, facing deflationary risks, it “makes sense” that stock prices of Chinese companies are not rising. Because of this, EEM ETF is also not really rising, it is range bound.
