The Russell 2000 is a very interesting market. We look at the Russell 2000 in two different ways. On the one hand, we analyze the Russell 2000 chart to understand whether small caps are an attractive buy vs. should be sold when they reach a local top. However, much more interesting is the analysis of the Russell 2000 chart in the context of its leading indicator characteristic. Indeed, the Russell 2000 is a leading indicator for U.S. stocks, arguably even global stocks. The point is this: the Russell 2000 is the ultimate momentum barometer, representing stock market momentum. This really means that when there cannot be broad based market momentum, with broad participation of many stock market segments, without a strong uptrend in the Russell 2000. That’s why we continue to analyze the Russell 2000, we also always indicate that our Russell 2000 analysis and conclusions relate to the direction of the stock market in general and market momentum more specifically.
