The SEC decided in 2018 that cryptocurrencies are commodities. Regardless, we consider them a totally new asset class because they are so different than commodities. They are based on technology, solve problems in life (as opposed to commodities which are mostly raw materials), are heavily disrupting the financial system and enable peer2peer payments. It is clear to anyone that from a 'real life' perspective this is not part of commodities, and it deserves to be a separate asset class.
